A quote can keep an old program name long after its application window closes. Verify the administrator's current page before relying on an incentive or loan. Keep financing, non-repayable incentives and installer discounts on separate lines so the project cost remains clear.
Start from the administrator, not the sales sheet
Natural Resources Canada identifies the Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan as closed. The Loan's last application day was October 1, 2025; the Grant's final document-upload deadline was December 31, 2025. Those historical programs should not be presented as funding available to a new applicant.
A current offering may be administered by a municipality, utility or other organization with a different purpose and eligibility. Record its official page, application window, property criteria and approval-before-work rules. If eligibility is not confirmed, keep the calculator incentive at zero.
Read Calgary CEIP as financing
Calgary's residential Clean Energy Improvement Program is repayable financing through the property-tax mechanism, with interest and application conditions. Its page describes pre-qualification, project approvals and agreements before work; it also directs residents to application/reopening information. It is not a solar rebate or a promise that every applicant can access funding.
Review the current program terms, qualified-contractor requirements, lender or ownership consents and implications when selling the property. Do not copy a past intake date or interest rate into a permanent planning page. Use the official administrator's current information when making the application decision.
Compare loan cash flow with energy value
Enter financed principal, interest rate, fees, term and payment timing from the written financing offer. Compare payments with a conservative energy-value scenario and with the remaining utility costs. A lower bill does not automatically cover the financing payment.
Keep borrowing cost separate from the physical installed cost. Two identical arrays can have different total ownership costs when one financing offer includes fees or a different repayment term. Ask whether early repayment or a sale changes the obligation.
Retain evidence for every deducted amount
For a confirmed incentive, keep eligibility acceptance, eligible cost definitions, required invoices and completion deadlines. An installer discount should appear in the quote rather than be described as government funding. Avoid paying or commencing work on the assumption that an unapproved program will reimburse it later.
A hypothetical homeowner comparing a cash purchase with tax-based financing should evaluate both the construction scope and the financing agreement. The project may be the same, but payment timing, interest and property-transfer consequences can differ.
- Current official program page checked.
- Financing and grants kept separate.
- Eligibility and approval timing confirmed.
- Interest, fees and full repayment schedule reviewed.
